for Shepherd’s Bush Stockings Assumptions: Basic machine sewing knowledge. All seams will be sewn on a machine. Cording and fabric will be used to make piping. If a finished decorative cording is used, ignore the piping instructions. Attach the decorative cording to the finished stocking by hand. Material List: Stitched Stocking Construction paper ½ yard backing fabric ½ yard lining fabric 2 yards cotton cording, diameter can vary according to personal preference A finished decorative cording can be substituted for the cotton cording Thread Personalized label Step-by-Step Instructions 1. Baste stocking outline as indicated on the chart. 2. Lay stocking face up on a sheet of construction paper that has been marked in the middle with a large ‘X’. We will refer to the X later. 3. Using a sharp pencil, poke through the stocking along the basting stitch, making an outline of dots on the paper. 4. Connect the dots. 5. On the pattern, measure ¾" around the perimeter of the stocking and 2" at the top. This will create the finished pattern size, including all necessary seam allowances and a turn down at the top. 6. Cut out the pattern along the outer line. 7. Place a single layer of the backing fabric right side down on a cutting board. 8. Place the pattern on the fabric with the X facing up. 9. Weigh or pin down the pattern and cut out the backing piece. 10. Fold the lining fabric together, right sides facing each other. 11. Repeat steps 8 and 9, creating two pieces. 12. Using the left over backing fabric, cut 3" wide bias strips in the longest lengths possible. 13. Place the pattern over the stitched stocking and cut it to size. ** This completes the cutting portion of this project. 14. Seam the bias strips on the short ends, creating one long bias strip. Use a ¼" seam allowance. To be safe, the bias strip should be at least 60" long. 15. Fold the bias strip in half, over the cotton cord, right sides facing out. 16. Keeping the cord as snug in the fold as possible, sew a seam as close as possible to the cord. 17. Place the stitched piece face up on a work surface. Starting and ending an inch or two above the top basting line, place the piping on top of the stocking matching the piping’s seam line to the stocking’s basting line. This will align the cord on the inside of the basting line and all the unfinished edges will be facing the same direction. 18. Pin these two pieces together, clipping the piping to round the heel and toe as needed. Reserve any extra piping for a hanging loop. 19. Machine baste the piping to the stocking, sewing along the existing seam line in the piping. Remove the pins. 20. Place the backing fabric right side up on a work surface. Lay the stitched and piped piece face down on top of the backing fabric. 21. Match edges and pin the layers together. 22. Sew all layers together, using the basting line as a guide. 23. Trim and grade seam allowances. 24. Turn the stocking right side out, using the piping to pull the seam even on the front and back. 25. Turn down the top margin along the basting line of the stocking face. The extra piping will fold down with the margin. 26. Remove any visible basting stitches. 27. Use leftover piping to make a hanging loop. Finish the raw edge of the piping as desired. 28. Pin the hanging loop to the inside of the backing fabric at the top of the stocking. Place it as close to the seam at the side opposite the toe of the stocking. Tack in place securely. 29. Sew the two lining pieces, right sides together. Use a 7/8" seam allowance. This will make the lining slightly smaller than the outer stocking. Do not turn right side out. 30. Fold the top of the lining down to make a cuff on the outside of the lining. 31. Insert the lining into the stocking. Adjust the cuff of the lining so it is just below the top edge of the stocking. 32. Slip stitch the lining to the stocking along the top edge. 33. Add a personalized label and give the stocking to a loved one. 34. Do a Happy Dance and post it to the Board!!!!!!!!!!
